Powder Coated Railings: Durability & Benefits

Powder coated railings are a beautiful addition to a metal or glass railing system. They are available in a wide selection of colors, or you can choose a custom color that best fits your design goals and aesthetics. In addition to being a durable material, powder coated railings offer a host of other benefits including sustainability.

Powder coating offers an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional painting methods. It doesn’t rely on solvents or chemical carriers to make the color adhere to the surface which eliminates VOC emissions. Instead, this method uses an electrostatic charge to hold the paint to the steel. This method is more environmentally-friendly than other paint options and, as a result, will help your project meet LEED requirements. Let’s take a closer look at some of the benefits that come with powder coated railings.

Benefits of Powder Coated Railings

Powder coated railings offer a wide range of benefits including durability and low maintenance needs. The powder coating process is environmentally-friendly and can even help when it comes to obtaining LEED credits for the project. Beyond that, they make a statement that allows the railing to be an integral part of the larger design.

Durable

The durable finish that powder coating offers is a result of the process used to adhere the coating to the surface of the metal. Powder coating consists of a blend of polymer resin systems, curatives, pigments, leveling agents, flow modifiers, and other additives. These components are melted, mixed, cooled, and then ground up to form a powder.

This powder is then applied to the railing with electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) which applies an electrostatic charge to the molecules which attracts them to the metal railing. After the application, the railing is cured with heat which triggers a chemical reaction that forms long molecular chains, creating a durable finish.

Long-Lasting

Because powder coating is applied with an electrostatic charge and then cured, the finish is incredibly durable and therefore long-lasting. This means that the railing will continue to look beautiful without chipping or flaking as can happen with other types of finishes.

This durability means that powder coated steel railings are resistant to chips, corrosion, fading, and scratches and hold up well against impacts, weather events, chemical exposure, and ultraviolet lights. While the process can cost more upfront than painting, the long-lasting finish that’s achieved often makes it worth the additional cost.

Low Maintenance

Another benefit of the powder coating process is that it creates a product that is not only durable but is also low maintenance. Powder coated railings stand up against chips and scratches, won’t fade, and aren’t prone to corrosion.

Finishing Options

Our powder coating options fall into three categories — Standard Colors, Metallic Colors, and Primary Colors. Within these categories are a wide range of colors and hues.

Standard Colors include Matte Black, Light Gray, Redwood, and Charcoal Gray and offer a pop of color in any space. Metallic Colors feature a beautiful sheen for added depth and include Copper Penny, Champagne, and Cosmic Gray. Primary Colors are a perfect choice to make a bold statement. Colors like Chartreuse, Violet, and Amber offer a colorful intervention.

If you’re not able to find the color to complete your space, we also offer customized powder coating colors to blend into the design and aesthetic.

Safe and Sustainable

Compared to paint, which releases volatile organic compounds (VOC) into the air as it cures and even after it’s dry, powder coating doesn’t. Powder coating is non-toxic and doesn’t release VOCs or pollution. Because it’s a powder, the waste from application is also minimal, and if some of the powder fails to adhere, it can be collected and put back into use.

Ideal for Multiple Applications

Depending on the color, powder coated railings can make a bold statement or harmonize with the overall design, making them a good fit for a range of spaces and styles. From libraries and offices to multi family or residential buildings, powder coated metal railings meet safety needs while looking beautiful.

Because a powder coated finish is so durable and long-lasting, it’s ideal for both indoor and outdoor applications. Its resistance to impacts serves it well in high-traffic areas and its corrosion resistance means you won’t have to worry about weather spoiling the finish.
