From Facade to Sculpture: How VIVA Railings Redefined Scrap as Art

Every project begins with a vision. For VIVA Railings, that vision doesn’t end at installation—it evolves, adapts, and sometimes takes on a completely new life.

This is the story of how a functional architectural system gave birth to an unexpected piece of art.

The Beginning: A Facade with Purpose

When our team was commissioned to fabricate FotoFacade® | Wall Panel Systems, the challenge was clear: precision laser-cut metal panels that not only served a structural purpose but also embodied artistic expression.

The panels were cut with intricate hand-shaped patterns—each detail carefully engineered to create a façade that would be both durable and visually striking.

As the laser traced those shapes into sheets of aluminum, something fascinating happened. The “leftovers” began to collect. Shapes of hands, discarded offcuts, were piling up.

To most, they were scrap.
To us, they were possibility.

The Turning Point: Seeing Beyond Scrap

At VIVA, sustainability isn’t just about recycling materials—it’s about reimagining their potential.

Our MetalSpaces division, known for transforming metal into architectural art, asked a simple but powerful question:

“What if these pieces weren’t waste? What if they were the beginning of something new?”

That question was the spark.

The Transformation: Crafting a Sculpture

The offcuts were collected, polished, and studied. The outlines of hands—once negative space—were suddenly full of meaning. Hands are universal symbols of connection, collaboration, and support.

Piece by piece, our team designed and assembled these cutouts into a sculptural form: a striking composition of interlocking hands reaching upward.

What started as discarded fragments of a façade had become a standalone work of art.

The Outcome: Innovation Made Visible

Today, the hand sculpture stands proudly outside our VIVA Railings headquarters—a reminder of what happens when sustainability meets creativity. It is not tied to the original building project. Instead, it is entirely a VIVA creation, born from our commitment to innovation and design thinking.

This piece tells a bigger story:

  • That sustainability can mean creating, not just conserving.
  • That design doesn’t stop at the boundary of a project.
  • That MetalSpaces is more than fabrication—it’s about pushing the limits of what metal can become.

Why This Matters for Architects and Designers

For architects and designers, the lesson is clear: the materials you specify have more potential than you might imagine. They don’t just shape buildings; they can inspire entirely new forms of expression.

At VIVA, we’re not only building systems that meet performance standards—we’re building stories, opportunities, and, sometimes, art.

The sculpture is more than an object. It’s proof of a philosophy: architecture and art are not separate—they are part of the same continuum.
