The Future of Handrail Finishes: Exploring New Coating Technology

For as long as people have been walking up and down changing elevations, handrails have been right alongside them, guiding the way and offering support. From simple handholds carved into stone walls to intricate wrought iron railings and stone balustrades, this design necessity is often the unsung hero of safety and design aesthetics.

As technology has advanced, so have the handrails options. Today, we use materials like stainless steel, glass, and aluminum to craft handrails that fit with our modern architecture while offering the safety still necessary to support people as they move through the space. Other advances, like integrated LED lighting and powder coating have further enhanced the ability for handrails to be a functional element that takes style to the next level.

Now, a new innovation in handrail finishes is elevating the handrail even further into its place as not only a safety feature, but a feature that’s integral to guiding and supporting not only people, but the design as a whole.

Today’s designs require a high level of durability and choice if they’re going to stand tall in the modern design world. Modern handrails need to stand up to harsh environments, blend seamlessly with the overall aesthetic, and have a reduced environmental impact. This is possible, in part, due to innovations in handrail coatings.

CeraShield: The Next Generation Solution

At VIVA Railings, we’ve developed Cerashield to create a new standard in handrail finishing. CeraShield is powered by Cerakote technology and is the ideal solution to a world in which demands on handrails continue to evolve. No longer are handrails only integrated for safety. Today, they are an integral part of the design, at times even guiding the direction and execution.

Universal Coating Technology

2

CeraShield is a coating technology that acts as an alternative to anodizing. It can be applied to stainless steel, aluminum, and steel and comes in a wide range of colors — we offer 40 unique color options to fit your design needs. Anodizing, on the other hand, has limitations that restrict its applications. It can only support a narrow color palette and is most frequently used with aluminum.

Reduced Environmental Impact

Unlike other finishes, Cerakote is VOC compliant in all 50 states and is free of heavy metals. This makes it an environmentally-friendly choice that meets REACH, ROHS, and Proposition 65 standards. The traditional anodizing process involves hexavalent chromium which is restricted under many environmental regulations.

Increased Durability and Consistency over Other Coatings

When used on aluminum alloys, anodizing can induce brittleness and tensile residual stress. CeraShield, however, doesn’t. It allows the metal to retain its fatigue properties which, in turn, retains its longevity and durability. Anodized coating colors can also vary from batch to batch which can be an issue for projects with large volumes. CeraShield’s consistency means that you’ll see the same color across the entire project.

Exceptional Performance in Harsh Environments

Exterior handrail applications call for a durable finish that can stand up to the elements. Daily exposure to sun, wind, rain, snow, and other weather events can wear on a finish causing it to chip, flake, or fade. CeraShield guards against this with high performance in outdoor settings. It can withstand maximum temperatures up to 1,200-degrees Fahrenheit before flaking. It also has a pencil hardness test rating between 7H and 9H compared to the standard powder coat color rating that goes up to 6H.

This ceramic-based finish is exceptionally durable and offers superior resistance to corrosion and fading to create color consistency through the years. These properties make it ideal for coastal environments and high-traffic commercial spaces.

Handrail Finishing Trends

As handrails continue to evolve, there are other finishing trends that are worth mentioning that continue to push the boundaries of what handrails are capable of and how they impact their environment. Anti-microbial coatings protect users from germs while low-VOC finishes protect the environment. Texture innovations can signal shifts in elevation and increase grip for added safety. CeraShield is at the forefront of modern handrail trends, increasing durability and extending the life of the handrail, ultimately saving time and money and reducing the environmental impact that comes with replacing handrails over time.
